The National Health School (ENS) was founded in 1962 as the Public Health Technical School. It aims at educating human resources of intermediate and assistant technical level for the health system. Even though it was closed from 1965 until some months into 1969, approximately five thousand professionals have graduated from it.

In January 1987, it became subordinated to the National Department of Education and Capacity Building that, in turn, was part of the structure of the Human Resources National Direction of the then Ministry of Social Provision and Public Health.

Following the National Regulation of the Human Resources Education System, today the school is subordinated to the Ministry of Health and Sports. It is also responsible for the establishment of rules and supervision of the private and public centers of education for these professionals in the departments of La Paz, Oruru, Potosi, Chuquisaca and Pando.
