06/11/2024 - Researchers from the Fiocruz Global Health Center (Cris/Fiocruz) provide an overview of the 77th World Health Assembly, which concluded on 6/1/2024, highlighting the key moments of the event. The authors emphasize the approval of important resolutions by the 194 Member States of the WHO, ranging from the 14th General Programme of Work of the WHO (GPW14-PGT14) and amendments to the International Health Regulations (IHR) to those related to Climate and Health, Economy and Health for All, Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), and Mental Health and Emergencies, among many others. The article also highlights the "decisive Brazilian participation" in the approval of the resolution that implements, reinforces, and maintains social participation in health decision-making processes. -
06/10/2024 - On June 3 and 4, the Joaquim Venâncio Polytechnic School of Health (EPSJV) hosted a workshop as part of the project “Human Resources in Health in the Context of Covid-19: Strengthening Capacities to Improve Health System Responses,” focusing on capacity building for health professionals in remote areas. The event presented findings from the project's initial phase, highlighting the usage patterns of the PAHO/WHO Virtual Campus for Public Health. Discussions addressed the governance of the virtual campus, the significance of data on health technicians, and the necessity for educational pathways aligned with WHO Academy standards. Participants also explored the concentration of enrollments in specific courses and the need for more granular data to assess the impact on local health conditions. -
05/28/2024 - The week-long Assembly will be taking up resolutions and decisions dealing with a new four-year strategy to WHO; it’s new funding appeal to raise some $7 billion more over that period in voluntary funds from donors; the humanitarian crises related to wars in Ukraine and Gaza; as well as a host of other vital health themes – from a new resolution on climate and health to the status of efforts to eliminate malaria, tackle chronic disease as well as head off a wave of drug resistant pathogens and disease, to name just a few. -
05/10/2024 - In the year in which it completes 20 years as a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center for the Education of Health Technicians, the Joaquim Venâncio Polytechnic School of Health (EPSJV/Fiocruz) promoted, on April 16, the webinar “Profile and educational trajectories of health technicians who take courses at CVSP/Opas”. Held in partnership with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the event aims to present the platform and methodology used in a research that analyzes the trajectory and experience of health technician users who have already taken courses at the Virtual Campus of PAHO Public Health through a characterization of the sociodemographic and work profile of these workers and a survey of the courses most frequently offered by health technicians at the regional level. -
04/18/2024 - The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) recently presented a series of recommendations at G20 events in Brazil to strengthen equity in access to digital health, expand innovation and production of health technologies, tackle antimicrobial resistance, increase health investment and ensure greater retention of health workforce in the countries and territories of the Americas. -

04/05/2024 - This year's theme was chosen to defend the right of all people, everywhere, to have access to quality health services, education and information, as well as clean water, clean air, good nutrition, quality housing, decent environmental and working conditions and freedom from discrimination. For World Health Day, celebrated on April 7, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) reiterated its commitment to the right to health for all people, without discrimination of any kind. "At PAHO, we strive to fulfill this right to health by working with our Member States to advance universal health for all, including for those populations living in situations of vulnerability,” PAHO Director, Dr. Jarbas Barbosa, said. -
03/25/2024 - On the eve of World Tuberculosis Day (24 March), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is calling countries to intensify the fight against this preventable and curable disease. Tuberculosis is the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent worldwide, surpassed only by COVID-19. "It is time to redouble efforts and work toward a future where TB is no longer a public health threat," PAHO Director Dr. Jarbas Barbosa said. “Countries in the Americas have committed to TB elimination and we have new technologies and strategies that could bring us closer to realizing this vision," he stressed. -

These commitments were made at the first-ever Global Cervical Cancer Elimination Forum: Advancing the Call to Action in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, to catalyse national and global momentum to end this preventable disease. -
02/19/2024 - The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) convened countries from the Americas for a meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, to discuss the progress of negotiations on a possible future global pandemic agreement. The objective of the two-day meeting, which concluded on Friday (02/16), was to review the key components of the preliminary document to be presented in May for approval by the World Health Assembly (WHA).
