  • PAHO calls for breaking down barriers that keep one in three people in the Americas from accessing health
    04/09/2018 - On the eve of World Health Day, the Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Carissa F. Etienne, and former president of Chile Michelle Bachelet today called for collective actions to ensure that all people, everywhere have access to the health services they need. In the Americas region, one third of the population faces obstacles to accessing health. "Health is a right, and as such we must overcome barriers to have access to care," said Etienne, noting that out-of-pocket payment that many people must make to obtain health services "constitutes the main barrier and pushes families towards poverty."

The group will propose bold and innovative solutions to accelerate prevention and control of the leading killers on the planet—noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) like heart and lung disease, cancers, and diabetes.

  • UN Environment and WHO agree to major collaboration on environmental health risks
    01/11/2018 - UN Environment and WHO have agreed a new, wide-ranging collaboration to accelerate action to curb environmental health risks that cause an estimated 12.6 million deaths a year. Yesterday (01/10/2018), Mr Erik Solheim, head of UN Environment, and Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO, signed an agreement to step up joint actions to combat air pollution, climate change and antimicrobial resistance, as well as improve coordination on waste and chemicals management, water quality, and food and nutrition issues. The collaboration also includes joint management of the BreatheLife advocacy campaign to reduce air pollution for multiple climate, environment and health benefits.
