CPLP event highlights progress and difficulties in strengthening healthcare in the community's member states
In the Alma Declaration on Primary Care -Ata, signed on September 12, 1978 in what was then the Soviet Union (Russia), governments from different countries recognized health as a fundamental human right and considered primary health care (PHC) to be the ideal strategy for combating inequality in access to health, so that everyone can lead a socially and economically productive life. The declaration also highlights PHC in prevention and community care, among others, and introduces the concept of intersectorality, stating that achieving health goals depends on working together with other social and economic sectors. Since then, although PHC continues to be seen as the best strategy for meeting people's health needs, a lot has changed in the world, with a direct impact on the organization of national health systems and, consequently, on the possibility of implementing equitable and universal policies for the sector.
The International Seminar on Primary Health Care in the Member States of the CPLP was organized by the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine of the NOVA University of Lisbon (IHMT NOVA) and the National Council of Health Secretaries (CONASS - Brazil) - respectively, a member and coordinator of the Thematic Commission on Health and Food and Nutritional Security of the Consultative Observers of the CPLP - in partnership with the Executive Secretariat of the CPLP and was brilliantly realized as a space for debate on strategies for strengthening PHC in the countries that make up the Community.
In this sense, the event allowed all those who are part of the public health systems of the CPLP member states, health training and research institutions, such as researchers, teachers or students, non-governmental organizations and multilateral bodies working in the sector, to have access to the best and most up-to-date knowledge on various issues addressed during the three days of the seminar. Another highlight was the presentation by Manuel Clarote Lapão, the CPLP's Director of Cooperation, who gave an overview of the organization: how it is structured, how it operates and how it has strengthened over the course of its existence.
For those who were unable to follow the discussions, either in person or virtually, the CPLP has made available the videos of the sessions and the materials presented during the event. Don't miss this opportunity to have access to current information, knowledge and reflections of the highest quality.
