Achieving universal health coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals

On 25-26 October 2018, the world will come together to renew a commitment to strengthening primary health care to achieve universal health coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals.

We have received over 500 comments on the Draft Declaration on Primary Health Care and incorporated them in this updated draft. This Declaration, which describes the need for Primary Health Care to address today’s health challenges, affects the health of everyone! We are reopening Public Consultation to ensure we hear from a broad range of stakeholders. We would like to hear from you. From patient to provider, from policy maker to educator - it doesn't matter who you are or where you are from, primary health care is important to us all. The comment period will be open until 22 July at midnight CEST.

The world is ready

40 years ago, we committed to strengthening primary health care worldwide. This year the world will come together to recommit to strengthening primary health care to achieve universal health coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Essential to health

90% of a person's health needs across their lifetime can be covered by primary health care. It leads to better health outcomes, improved quality of care and longer life expectancy.

Member States

194 country delegations invited to the Conference including Ministers of Health, Education and Finance, civil society, and key partners and international organisations

About the Conference

The Global Conference on Primary Health Care, co-hosted by Government of Kazakhstan, the World Health Organization and UNICEF, will take place on 25-26 October in Astana, Kazakhstan on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Declaration of Alma-Ata.

The anniversary of this seminal milestone in global health provides an opportunity to reaffirm the principles of the original declaration and underline the importance of primary health care to achieve our collective goals for the 21st century.
