Good Practices in South-South and Triangular Cooperation for Sustainable Development

Date of publication:
06/07/2016

Review / Summary:

The United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation launched a publication to highlight good practices from Southern nations that are relevant to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. Called “Good Practices in South-South and Triangular Cooperation for sustainable Development”, the publication presents initiatives in which developing countries turn to one another to address common challenges, and the WFP Centre of Excellence against Hunger is one of the experiences featured.

The goal of the publication is to demonstrate the efficacy of South-South and triangular cooperation in fostering joint initiatives to accelerate sustainable human development. The initiatives featured were selected among recommendations by United Nations agencies and other development partners. The selected experiences illustrate the main characteristics of effective South-South and triangular cooperation, benefit a great number of people, address transnational development challenges and have been already tested in various locations.

The publication explains that the WFP Centre of Excellence is a partnership between WFP and Brazil that helps to make the Brazilian experience in addressing the Zero Hunger Challenge available to other developing countries for learning, sharing and adaptation through South-South and triangular cooperation.

It highlights that the Centre contributes for the development of nationally-owned, sustainable programmes and policies for school feeding, social protection and nutrition improvement. It aims to help governments to create long-term, lasting solutions to defeat hunger and poverty by building local skills and knowledge, promoting food and nutrition security through school feeding programmes, and contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
