  • 06/28/2019 - The World Health Organization warns that antimicrobial resistance is "one of the greatest health risks." Over 50% of antibiotics in many countries are used improperly. Therefore, the AWaRe tool has been developed by the WHO Essential List of Medicines to contain growing resistance to antibiotics and to make their use safer and more effective. Read more!
  • 06/17/2019 - A new report from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) reveals that the number of road traffic deaths continues to rise in the Americas, reaching almost 155,000 per year, 11% of the world’s total. The report, “Status of Road Safety in the Region of the Americas”, highlights that road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death for children aged 5 to 14 years, and the second highest cause of death for young people aged between 15 and 29 years. It is also the tenth highest cause of death for all age groups.
  • 06/11/2019 - 'Interprofessional education in the training and work of health technicians' was the theme of the 7th Virtual Seminar of the International Network Health Technicians Education (RETS), headquartered at Joaquim Venâncio Polytechnic School of Health (EPSJV/Fiocruz). Held on June 4, the event brought together researchers Marina Peduzzi, from the University of São Paulo (USP), and José Rodrigues Freire Filho, an international consultant on human resources in health at the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), via Skype. According to Peduzzi, interprofessional education "happens when students and professionals from a certain area have opportunities for joint learning and shared with students and professionals from other areas, with the purpose of developing collaborative skills and abilities that favor teamwork."
  • 06/10/2019 - The first ever celebration of the United Nations World Food Safety Day, to be marked globally on 7 June, aimed to strengthen efforts to ensure that the food we eat is safe. Every year, nearly one in ten people in the world (an estimated 600 million people) fall ill and 420,000 die after eating food contaminated by bacteria, viruses, parasites or chemical substances.Unsafe food also hinders development in many low- and middle-income economies, which lose around US$ 95 billion in productivity associated with illness, disability, and premature death suffered by workers. 
  • 06/06/2019 - Every day, there are more than 1 million new cases of curable sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among people aged 15-49 years, according to data released released this Thursday, June 6 by the World Health Organization. This amounts to more than 376 million new cases annually of four infections - chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomoniasis, and syphilis. “We’re seeing a concerning lack of progress in stopping the spread of sexually transmitted infections worldwide,” said Dr Peter Salama, Executive Director for Universal Health Coverage and the Life-Course at WHO. “This is a wake-up call for a concerted effort to ensure everyone, everywhere can access the services they need to prevent and treat these debilitating diseases.”
  • 05/31/2019 - The 7th RETS Virtual Seminar 'Interprofessional Education in the training and work of health technicians' will be held on June 4, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. (Brasília time), at the EPSJV Auditorium, with a live webcast and translation simultaneous to Spanish. At the event, the research professors Marina Peduzzi, Nildo Alves Batista and José Rodrigues Freire Filho will present the theme and discuss possibilities for the use of this strategy in the training of health technicians.
  • 05/28/2019 - Delegates from the World Health Assembly adopted three resolutions on universal coverage, focusing on: primary health care, the role of community health workers and the United Nations General Assembly high-level meeting on universal health coverage.
  • 05/22/2019 - When presenting the main topics for discussion at the World Health Assembly to delegations from the countries of the Americas, Carissa F. Etienne, Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), urged them to ensure that their interventions reflect the Region’s position on universal health, which includes universal health coverage and access. The World Health Assembly will be extensively discussing universal health coverage, not only at the plenary, but also in the different decisions that will be made on the subject. In her address to the delegates of the Americas, the PAHO Director recalled the process involved in reaching a consensus in 2014 on universal health coverage and access.  
  • 05/20/2019 - The death toll among 34,300 cases reported across 42 countries in the WHO’s European region reached 13, with the virus killing people in Ukraine - which is suffering a measles epidemic - as well as in Romania and Albania. The risk is that outbreaks may continue to spread, that's why WHO warned that is urging authorities to ensure that vulnerable people are vaccinated.
  • 05/20/2019 - In recommendations to counter an expected tripling in the number of people with the degenerative condition in the next 30 years, the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines are designed to help medical professionals and governments to develop national policies. Today, around 50 million people globally suffer from dementia and there are nearly 10 million new cases every year.
