10/30/2018 - In 1978, a pivotal conference was held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, bringing together health experts and world leaders to commit to health for all. Endorsed at that conference, the Declaration of Alma-Ata formed the foundation for the last 40 years of global primary health care efforts. The Global Conference on Primary Health Care in Astana, Kazakhstan in October endorsed a new declaration emphasizing the critical role of primary health care around the world. The declaration will refocus efforts on primary health care to ensure that everyone everywhere is able to enjoy the highest possible attainable standard of health. -
10/11/2018 - The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) will provide grants for the implementation of initiatives to improve Information Systems for Health (IS4H) in the Americas. These initiatives should focus on improving existing health programs, strategies or policies. The call for proposals will remain open until 15 November 2018,12:00 pm (Eastern Standard Time). The application form can be downloaded at www.paho.org/ish. Instructions on how to complete the form are also available via that link. Once the application form has been completed, it should be saved as a PDF file and submitted via the website. -
10/11/2018 - Over the last 50 years, human activities – particularly the burning of fossil fuels – have released sufficient quantities of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases to trap additional heat in the lower atmosphere and affect the global climate.In the last 130 years, the world has warmed by approximately 0.85oC. Each of the last 3 decades has been successively warmer than any preceding decade since 1850. Sea levels are rising, glaciers are melting and precipitation patterns are changing. Extreme weather events are becoming more intense and frequent. -
10/02/2018 - “Great progress” has been made in tackling tobacco consumption and saving lives but more needs to be done to challenge the industry’s attempts to “bypass” international regulations, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday (10/01). At an international meeting on tobacco control in Geneva, the WHO reported that that nearly two-thirds of the 181 States parties to the WHO Framework Convention for Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) have developed strategies “to prevent tobacco industry interference with tobacco control policies”. -
09/26/2018 - Health authorities from the countries and territories of the Region of the Americas on 26 September 2018 agreed on a new plan to reduce a shortfall of 800,000 health workers needed to meet the current needs of the Region’s health systems. The agreement was reached during the 56thDirecting Council of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). The Plan of Action on Human Resources for Universal Access to Health and Universal Health Coverage 2018-2023 marks the path for the countries to have the human resources they need in order to meet the worldwide goal of universal health by 2030. The plan also aims to improve the geographical distribution and skills of human resources to reach everyone, everywhere. -
09/24/2018 - The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Spanish Society of Public Health and Health Administration (SESPAS) have agreed on joint actions to promote the dissemination of scientific research on systems and services in the region of the Americas. Both organizations committed themselves to work on improving the quality and availability of such research. The cooperation agreement, signed on 5 September by the Deputy Director of PAHO, Isabella Danel, and the President of SESPAS, Dr Joan Ramon Villalbí Hereter, also seeks to bring quality research to greater Spanish-speaking audiences in Latin America, the Caribbean and Spain in order to promote greater knowledge about health systems and services research. Gaceta Sanitaria is the official scientific publication of SESPAS, which will be the focus this cooperation with PAHO. -
09/20/2018 - WHO’s 2018 Global TB Report, released in New York on September 18, calls for an unprecedented mobilization of national and international commitments. It urges political leaders gathering next week for the first-ever United Nations High-level Meeting on TB to take decisive action, building on recent moves by the leaders of India, the Russian Federation, Rwanda, and South Africa. Nearly 50 Heads of State and Government are expected to attend the meeting. -
09/17/2018 - More than 18 million new cases of cancer are expected this year and it’s estimated that 9.6 million people will die from various forms of the disease in 2018, the UN’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) said on September 12. -
09/14/2018 - Due to the convening of the Astana meeting to be held in Kazakhstan next October, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Alma Ata Conference and Declaration, the Latin American Association of Social Medicine (Alames) published a statement and launched a online petition addressed to the authorities of the World Health Organization (WHO), the Ministers of Health of the whole world and the delegates that will be present at the Meeting. -
09/11/2018 - The course, which is free, self-directed and available in English on PAHO’s Virtual Campus for Public Health (https://www.campusvirtualsp.org/en), seeks to strengthen the capacities of primary healthcare professionals in identifying, evaluating and improving the approach towards suicidal behaviors in patients. Interested parties can access the course from 17 September when the platform is made available to the general public.
