The current Technical Professional School of Health of Luanda (Escola de Formação de Técnicos de Saúde de Luanda) is the heir of the Technical Schools in Health Services and Welfare of Ultramar (Escolas Técnicas dos Serviços de Saúde e Assistência do Ultramar). With the development of the Health Services and Welfare of Ultramar, it was transferred from Hospital Maria Pia to the hospital attached located in Rua Samba, 13, designed by Calouste Gulbenkian and inaugurated on September 7th, 1967, under the name Technical School in Health Services (Escola Técnica dos Serviços de Saúde). During the post-colonial transition – independence –, the institution was renamed Provincial Technical School of Health of Luanda (Escola Técnica Provincial de Saúde de Luanda), continuing to develop the educational process in different areas of health. The institution belongs to the Ministry of Health and its creation is embedded in the design of health education reforms, called Plan of Development of Human Resources – 1997/2007. This project aims to create five schools of its kind nationwide.
Since 2004, EFTS – Luanda is authorized to promote intermediate courses followed by two academic years of internship. The integration of these courses in technical and vocational education in Angola, according to the new Curricular Reform Law, Law No. 13/01 of December 31st, in the context of Intermediate Education for candidates with 12th Grade of overall secondary school, emerges as a basic foundation for their insertion in higher education.
