05/18/2026 - The hantavirus (Andes virus) is the focus of a new alert from the World Health Organization (WHO), which highlights the risks of its rare human-to-human transmission. The pathogen, traditionally associated with contact with wild rodents, recently demonstrated its high contagion potential during an outbreak aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius. This incident resulted in 11 infections and three deaths, reinforcing the need for strict isolation protocols and international contact tracing to contain the spread of the disease.

The event, which will be broadcast bilingually (Portuguese and Spanish) on the EPSJV YouTube channel, will be coordinated by the Laboratory of Scientific Initiation in Basic Education (LIC-PROVOC) of the Joaquim Venâncio Polytechnic School of Health (EPSJV/Fiocruz).

05/07/2026 - Fiocruz brought together representatives of social movements, traditional communities, researchers and public officials in a conference marked by broad public participation. The meeting reinforced the importance of collectively building pathways for Agenda 2030 and led to the proposal to include action against ecocide as a strategic theme in the debate on sustainable development, socio-environmental justice and human rights.

04/29/2026 - The World Health Organization conducted Exercise Polaris II, a two-day global simulation that brought together 26 countries, around 600 experts, and more than 25 partners to test, under near real-life conditions, the capacity to respond to a health emergency caused by a fictional pathogen. The initiative enabled the assessment of countries’ preparedness, strengthened international coordination, improved information flow, and operationalized strategic frameworks such as the Global Health Emergency Corps (GHEC).
