The current Formation's School of Technical in Health of Luanda (Escola de Formação Técnica de Saúde de Luanda - EFTS - Luanda) is the successor to the then called Technical School in Health Services and Assistance of Ultramar. With the development of the Technical School in Health Services and Assistance of Ultramar, it was transferred from Maria Pia Hospital to the institution attached to the hospital and located at Rua do Samba, 13. Conceived by Calouste Gulbekian, it opened in September 7th, 1967, with the designation of Technical School in Health Services. In the course of the post-colonial/independence transition, the institution was named Provincial Technical School in Health of Luanda and continued to develop the education process in the different areas of the health field.

Since the academic year of 2004, the school is authorized to give intermediate courses for two academic years followed by an internship period. The integration of these courses in the technical-professional teaching in Angola, according to the New Curriculum Reform Law, law number 13/01 of December 31st, within the context of Intermediate Education for the capacity building of candidates with a high school diploma, emerged as the basic fundamentals to the insertion of the those students in undergraduate courses.

The EFTS-Luanda is attached to the Ministry of Health and its creation is part of the reform project of Health training developed by the Human Resources Development Plan – 1997/2007. The goal of this project is to create five schools like this one all around the country.
